Frieze London 2025
London, UK
October 15 - October 19, 2025
The Pit is pleased to present a curated booth titled “Three Generations of Female California Ceramics” including works by represented artists Viola Frey, Jennifer King, and Maryam Yousif. The presentation will present historical works by seminal Bay Area artist Viola Frey alongside new works by two contemporary artists, both of whom are influenced by Frey’s work and career. The presentation will create a multi-generational conversation examining the ongoing impact of Frey’s work on contemporary ceramics.
In April 2025 The Pit announced representation of the estate of Viola Frey as part of an on-going commitment to promoting the works of overlooked California artists, and to generate multi-generational programming between emerging contemporary artists and historical artists of influence. Maryam Yousif and Jennifer King share a focus on feminist based practices with Viola Frey, exploring concepts of culture, power, and gender dynamics in their practices. Yousif was born in Iraq and migrated to Canada at a young age. She now works and teaches in the California Bay Area. Jennifer King was a student of legendary artist Betty Woodman and is now based in Los Angeles.
