The Pit is excited to present a solo booth in The Armory Show’s Focus Section of new ceramic works by Joel Gaitan (b. 1995), a first generation Nicaraguan artist living and working in Miami, Florida. The project will include new ceramic vessels and figurative sculptures on colorful tables lining the painted walls of the booth. Gaitan’s practice is a profoundly personal exploration of his Nicaraguan-rooted ancestry and his upbringing in Florida.The sculptures in this presentation expand on the artist’s themes of solitude and self-transcendence, building upon his previous explorations into the significance of home, spirituality, life and death, and his Nicaraguan heritage. Gaitan's cross-cultural study challenges historical hierarchies within his practice, using traditional terracotta vessels and keeping with themes found in sacred traditional Mesoamerican artifacts. His immersive exploration of his world traverses the ancient and contemporary realms of our collective human experience. His work is as much about his experience as an American in the South, as it is about his Nicaraguan roots, combining motifs from contemporary Miami with sacred histories from Mesoamerica. His work has been shown at NSU Art Museum, FL (2023); Public Art Fund, NY (2023); Ballroom Marfa, TX (2023); Nasher Museum of Art, NC (2023); El Museo del Barrio, NY (2022). He was the recipient of the Latinx Artist Fellowship and a finalist for the Darmo Art Prize in 2024. His work is in the public collections of the ICA Miami, El Museo Del Barrio, The Nasher Museum of Art, and The Bunker Collection.
