Los Angeles-based artist Nora Shields works across painting, sculpture, and installation. Her sculptural reliefs examine the relationship between industrial fabrication and the handmade, ornament, and abstraction. Shields develops rigorous visual language in which folded planes, curved forms, and luminous surfaces carry rich historical and cultural signals.
Her work engages the formal language of post-minimalism where industrial fabrication, geometry, and materials determine the structural underpinning of the work. Yet, unlike the perfection often associated with Minimalism, Shields deliberately introduces evidence of her own touch. She hand-bends metal, subtly distorts circles, folds planes so that imperfect geometries resist precision of the machine made. Perforated steel, automotive finishes, ribbons, metal mesh, and embroidery are transformed into surfaces that oscillate between architecture and clothing, monument and ornament.

However, rather than positioning herself within a single lineage, Shields constructs a practice in which Minimalism, Baroque sculpture, Pattern and Decoration, Constructivism, Postwar Abstraction, and contemporary installation remain active simultaneously.
Her works do not attempt to reconcile these histories so much as allow them to coexist —folded together into objects that are at once formally rigorous, materially seductive, and historically expansive. Shields works with flattened geometries and intersecting planes that tip to the legacy of Russian Constructivism, where engineering, architecture, and abstraction became mutually constitutive.
Underlying these formal investigations is a distinctly haptic sensibility. Shields creates objects that invite tactile imagination while withholding physical touch. Cold metal appears pliant, folded steel suggests fabric and drapery, painted surfaces seem simultaneously industrial and skin-like. The sculptures operate through recognition as much as abstraction, activating embodied memories of weight, tension, softness, gravity, and resistance.
IN THE STUDIO
"My forms are often allusive, with references to perceived feminine or symbolic objects, fans, shields, portals, embroidery, ribbon. I want their meaning to be open and associative for the viewer. They are ultimately abstract, reconfigured through the imagination and a kind of looseness of arranging and color."

Using metal, fabric, embroidery, and automotive paint, her compositions range from restrained, flat monochromes to vividly colored glossy surfaces that incorporate found pattern and texture. She uses draping alongside architectural motifs—walls, arches, seating—extending her interest in spatial perception.
Drawing on her background in art history, theater and interiors, she builds and layers a formal language that merges structural clarity with ornamental excess. Fringe and ribbon, in dialogue with paint and metal, establish a dynamic tension between the playful and the utilitarian, the hard and the soft edges of time.
Central to Shields's practice is the fold, not simply as a formal device but as a site of continuous transformation. A pleat records both compression and expansion; a fold opens up a spatial tension between the interior and exterior. Her works are often spare in form yet activated by bold color, yielding a visual intensity and vitality that is at once poetic and sensual.
NEW WORKS
Nora Shields Curious (Standing fold), 2026, Welded Aluminum, automotive paint & powder coating, 72½ x 48 x 25½ in.
Photography by Chris Hanke. On view in "Garden Show" at The Pit through August 30.
In her most recent works, Shields returns to her signature draping and folding techniques - this time creating large-scale sculptural monuments. These new works emphasize the body and scale forcing the viewer into a visceral interaction with the objects that loom overhead. Some pieces include fluorescent light fixtures - a nod to minimalist Dan Flavin - incorporated into the folds of the metal. These new works will be included in her upcoming solo exhibition at The Pit in January 2027.

“The ‘drape’ throughout art history has always fascinated me. Consider Bernini’s "Ecstasy of St Theresa", where the pleats and folds of drapery on ancient stone bodies are erotic. You dream of the cold stone against your body. But stone is also what bodies in classical sculpture are made from, like the material choices in architectures that signify power.”
